Coming Soon has a new pic for the upcoming Cars 2. The film follows Lightning McQueen and Mater as they head overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix, to determine the world’s fastest car. But when Mater gets caught up in a spy mission, his loyalties become divided between that and helping Lightning in the big race. Apparently there’s a lot of new car characters in this installment. I still wonder why, of all the excellent Pixar films, this is the first one to get a sequel aside from Toy Story, considering that’s its the least regarded. I’m still waiting for that Incredibles sequel, man.
Anyway, for some reason, this image gives me ever so slightly a Road Warrior vibe, with the explosion on the race course. If the other cars in the race consist of things like a jet engine car and a truck with harpoons, they may have something. A race car with a hockey mask on the grill or a nutbag car in assless chaps voiced by Vernon Wells would absolutely rule…although I’m not sure how the logistics of the chaps would work. Cars 2 opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on June 24, 2011. You can click the image to enlarge.

I understand all the hate Cars gets. In the scheme of Pixar movies it is the weakest. But, even with that it was still a great movie for all of its flaws. It must be said that if your worst movie is still better than 98% of the shit made, Pixar must know what they are doing.
What do you mean the first one to get a sequel? Toy Story???????????
Let's not forget that Cars was Lasseter's baby. Since he is basically running the show, I am not surprised he wants to have this revisited. Ever since he has transitioned at Disney, I have had a huge "sellout" vibe from him. I hope I am wrong. Also, Cars rakes in HUGE merchandise revenue. Incredibles, Wall-E, A Bug' Life (now), Ratatouille….these don't sell toys like Toy Story or Cars. High quality is definitely a priority of Pixar, but so is making money.
@duffy: did you not read "aside from Toy Story?" Oh – and using countless question marks only makes you look idiotic – even more so than if you'd missed the "aside from Toy Story" line.
As to why this one gets a sequel, Pixar's probably trying to make amends for the original. They'd have the balls to do something like that, and that's why that company kicks ass.
#4, you're wrong….#3 hit the nail on the head.
Nothing about having balls, everything about money.
You wonder why out of all the Pixar movies, that this one gets sequelized? Because they can make tons of money off of the sales of Cars related merchandise. No other Pixar film (outside of Toy Story) has the potential of creating so many cheaply made in china happy meal toys. The Incredibles would not provide as many characters as Cars would, and little kids love playing with vehicles in the sandbox
The reason it's getting a sequel is because Cars merchandise has continuously been one of the top selling brands for pre-tween (fuck me for saying that) boys. Disney's weak link in merchandising has always been the male market (part of the reason they snatched up Marvel), and Cars was really their lone success to that demographic. It's entirely a money driven decision.
Sorry, but Cars is a good movie. Nerds just don't like it because they think it's a NASCAR movie, which it ain't.
It's not that Cars was a bad movie, it's that it was a BORING movie.
Considering its a kids movie, I don't think pleasing the adult "kid" is number one priority at Pixar.
I'm sure that the ridiculous merchandise sales have something to do with making this sequel. I have no idea how they make decisions at Pixar but a business case has to be made. I think Pixar is the best movie studio ever and put every effort into making great movies…but they are not true artists – they HAVE to make money (because it costs 200 million to make one of these) and sequels are a great way to do that. Shrek 2 and Toy Story 3 are the two most successful animated movies of all time – of course they are going to make sequels. But even with all that – does anybody think Cars 2 will be bad, or not entertaining, or not worth watching? Pixar has long since earned my 9 dollars on opening weekend no matter what. They deliver on levels untouched by any other animation studio.
No no no no. There's no road warrior in this movie. Quite the opposite. Take a look at the car on the right more. Think about what who might drive that. Got the hint?
I'm still waiting for Finding Nemo 2: Find Harder, and it's inevitable sequel Find Nemo With A Vengance
Cars is getting a sequel because the merchandising sales of the car characters has been absolutely, frickin', INSANE HUGE. Go figure, Disney wants more of that merch money.
"Cars" is a fun little flick, and a return to the old school Pixar. If you want to see trash from Pixar, just look UP. I stopped that snoozefest when the talking dogs showed up. They were at their best when doing entertaining stories for kids, like "A Bug's Life" or "Toy Story 2" (still their best), rather than pretentious "ambitious" garbage that seemed to start targeting stunted adults rather than kids (that ripoff about a superhero family, and all the rest that followed it.) Here's to "Cars 2" and its being more like "Toy Story" than "Toy Story 3"!
