We recently reported how The Thing was bumped off of its April 2011 release date by Universal, who gave it to Fast Five (still can’t believe that’s the actual title) instead and is now doing some reshoots, but now they’ve got a solid release locked down. As Jeremy predicted, it’s hitting in October to capitalize on our first Saw-free Halloween in eight years.
According to Universal Pictures’ twitter account- “Get ready…THE THING will be released on Friday, October 14, 2011!”
It’s certainly a better time for the film (the original released in summer, and look how well that worked out for them), but this also means that you might have to wait longer to see that excellent teaser trailer that they premiered at the NY Comic Con.

In that pic, are they inside the ship?
Wow a whole fucking year now? Color me completely forgetful.
Let's hope this piece of shi… p is going to be about 10% as successful as "Speed Racer" was.
No wonder they all died, those walls look like they're made of paper mache
#1- That's the general consensus, but no one's saying on record.
Looks like they've borrowed the set from Doctor Who (Tom Baker era).
Seriously, what is the point of this film? The two English speaking actors (and everyone else apart from a 'dog' and two crazed Norwegians) obviously don't make it to the end of the film so what is the point in rooting for them?..
I heard an interview with someone who worked in the antarctic on the radio the other day, apparently on the shortest, darkest and coldest night on the year everyone who works down there get together and watch John Carpenters the thing, which I thought was really cool.
Plenty of time for a post 3D conversion…
Plenty of time for replacing all the practical effects with cgi…all in post-converted 3d of course…
Actually…the teaser trailer is still somewhere on the interwebs and it looks pretty damn good….for a teaser trailer. The only "thing" I'm worried about is all the talk of re-shoots…that never bodes well for any film. Btw…Alex…thank you for being the only voice of reason in the mostly one-sided Walking Dead "discussions".
This is no cave…
Well we all knew it was studio bound (look for cgi fogged breath) and hollywood-ized (mactors). Now it has the usually not a good sign of enduring reshoots and a significant delay in releasing. It's gone from prime time to genre time. Guaranteed the reshoots upped the gore and the action and made it so the girl lives.
That picture just killed my interest.
fa5t and furiou5 would be worse
reshoots might not be a bad "thing" This means more time in post production to make the movie better.
All these remakes look like a private Disneyland film themed park where the baby boom generation's kids get to act out the parts of great films. This generation (mine) is an epic fail. Bring on the depression!
Ummm, am I the only one who sees irony in complaints about the remake of a film that was itself a remake of an earlier film?
And gee, shock horror, the new version of The Thing will likely be a somewhat scholcky B-movie. Where's the sin in that? B-movies are an artform all unto themselves, and the original (1951's The Thing from Another World) certainly was a great example of the genre.
For those of you worried about the reshoots, I have two words for you: Joy Ride.
It doesn't need CGI or extra CGI effects…John Carpenter's 'The Thing' used animatronics which looked a lot more realistic than any CGI
