…this time it’s scarier, because it’s not deluded nonsense this go round.
The news is simple and minimal: Alcon Entertainment is negotiating to buy the rights to Blade Runner from Bud Yorkin, one of the original executive producers on Ridley Scott’s sci-noir epic. Yorkin will be a producer on whatever results from the deal. This includes rights to remakes [actually I misread: remakes are excluded from the deal], sequels, prequels, and seemingly (for lack of better terms) sidequels, that would explore concepts introduced in the film in a more parallel manner. Warner Brothers will distribute whatever the hell they come up with, which could be a variety of… things, as Alcon Entertainment CEO’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove explain…
“We recognize the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only.”
So yeah. That’s all there really is, until they announce who is writing what on what kind of project in what medium for what purpose.

They’ve already made a sidequel to Blade Runner – Soldier. I imagine we’ll see more of the same thing. Just as long as they don’t take a direct shit on the original by roping in Harrison Ford as an old Deckard in that same environment (which definitely WON’T happen) I don’t really care what they do.
Deadline.com says that the deal excludes the rights to do a remake of the original. So…that bullet may already be dodged.

If Ridley Scott can do that “prequel” to Alien, then he can jump back in the saddle and do a sequel to Blade Runner.
They need to LEAVE IT ALONE. Don’t make ANYTHING that has to do with Blade Runner.
Meaningless. The original is safely ensconced in the beautiful and thorough Final Cut blu-ray package, forever. These guys can go ahead and do whatever they want.
I’ve thought a TV series on HBO would be interesting, if too expensive to pull off respectfully. Imagine a Blade Runner series like The Wire. Lots of intrigue, corruption, great characters and multi-layered story arcs set in a dystopian los angeles.
That could and would be the true heir to Battlestar…I’d watch it.
Yorkin is easily the biggest Twat in the BR making-of material.
“Multi-platform” (ie: the dreaded “Synergy”) puts Alcon right into the Twat club along-side him.
Yet another 20-30 years later sequel that nobody asked for or ever even wanted. Have we learned nothing from the Star Wars prequels, Indy and his Crystal Skull, and the sequels to The Lost Boys?
The thing is that remakes are simply gonna be part of Hollywood. We’re just living in the time where it’s becoming common practice, I think. It just took 100yrs for the industry to get to this point where it’s profitable to not only retell the same kind or genre of story over and over again, but also actually the same f’n story period. I think instead of getting mad, we should just accept that there’s not just one type of Santa Clause, for better or worse. (And I’m sure this analogy will work for few of you.)
Don’t make up words or concepts like “sidequel.” It will only give Hollywood “ideas” for movies to make up for their lack of real ideas. I can see them running with it and turning it into the new “gritty reboot.”
As long as it’s not a direct remake, I don’t think it’s a huge deal. The BladeRunner PC game that came out in 1997 was pretty awesome.
