As too good to be true as an Aronofsky-directed Wolverine always sounded, it’s clear that everyone involved genuinely meant for it to actually happen. Alas, that is not to be the ultimate results as the director has decided to part ways with the production. Specifically citing his unwillingness to go abroad and away from his family for the year+ it would take to produce the film, THR has the story.
Both the studio and Aronofsky maintain a strong relationship, with Fox saying that the production “will regroup and move forward aggressively.”
The twitter response that I’ve seen so far seems to essentially be, “yep, alright, fuck this movie now.” Which… is really really dumb.
There’s still a script that Aronofsky was willing to direct, and a studio that was willing to hire him. Is it possible or even likely they’ll hire a boring to replace him? Of course. But they’ve not made the decision yet, and considering their willingness to work with a demanding auteur in the first place, there’s at least a chance they’ll do it again.
When someone awful signs on the line that is dotted, that would be a good time to fuck the movie, until then…
It will be interesting to see what Aronofsky pursues next, now that he’s resolved to stay stateside. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the announcement of what that will be, as well as how will take the job he’s left behind.

I call bullshit. Aronofsky left because he didn’t want to shoot on location? Was he also surprised to find out they would be using cameras? This has “creative differences” written all over it, and my money says Fox signs a much more malleable director to replace him.

Darren Aronofsky is not directing Wolverine? Good! Maybe, Fox will hire a…Better director now. Ryuhei Kitamura, would be a…Perfect fit, as he has directed the…Awesome, Ninja film, Azumi, is Japanese, and maybe could be hired as a cheaper choice than the director of…Yawn, Black Swan.
Bad coupla days for Marvel fandom as David Slade is announced for Daredevil reboot (which guarantees this one will stink louder than the original, a feat I once thought impossible.) Whoever replaces Aronofsky will not make as good a Wolverine movie as he would’ve. Let’s all cross our fingers & hope that Branagh, Vaughn & Johnston deliver the goods for their respective Marvel responsibilities.

I think Aronofsky totally deserved a break in doing a studio film and playing around with bigger things.
Now he does have a tendency to attach to projects and leave, so if its him, fuck him. (I know I’ll watch his next film)
If its creative differences, I wouldn’t be surprised either.

This is going to be just as big a shitpile. I guess DA was counting on that Best Director Oscar to give him enough juice to offset Fox’s toxic culture.
In an interview promoting Black Swan, he smiled when asked what he has planned for Wolverine and implied the studio might not really know what he has up his sleeve. I can’t help but wonder if that’s exactly what the case is — like people are saying, Matt Vaughn also used family reasons for bailing. I’m not totally sold on Aronofsky, much as I like The Fountain. Would have been nice to see him do something commercial and see what kind of range the guy really has. I mean, he has already proven a lot, again, not that I’m crazy about most of it. Don’t like Pi. Requiem is good but kinda monotone for me after a while and not as shocking as it wants to be. The Fountain is great although I didn’t like the conquisitor parts. Probably needed a little more money. The Wrestler was solid, but sort of what you expect in a way. It was the kind of film it was but a lot of talents could have probably done it. I didn’t appreciate Black Swan. It seemed pretentious and little more than an overbaked version of Spanking the Monkey set in the world of dance. Portman was way too old for her character to be a believable virgin. I spent lot of time in art program and saw ballerinas often and they were stoners and very sexually experienced in general. I think Portman would have at least had to have been still in high school to pull off that sexual revolution aspect, which also seems about 30yrs too late in our culture. I couldn’t believe it was a sexual liberation kind of thing for a while there.

The current buzz online is that the main reason Aronofsky doesn’t want to leave the country for almost a year is almost 100% to do with the impending custody battle that he has with Rachel Weisz. I don’t think we can really blame Darren for dropping out of the film if that is the case.
