Viggo Mortensen, man of mystery and interest, has now opened the floodgates of speculation. According to Variety, Mortensen dropped out of Snow White and the Huntsman, a film he was all but locked for.
Variety is already fueling the flames that this frees him for Superman. A few days ago, Snyder shot down Mortensen’s involvement, but in a vague enough way that we don’t know whether it was schedule conflict or simply rumor.
It’s also unclear whether this puts him back in the running for The Dark Tower, a role that’s still missing an official Roland Deschain. Bardem was offered the role and was described as “psychologically locked” but that’s a pretty shaky commitment.
I fully expect Mortensen to be attached to everything now. The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games, The Wolverine, Les Miserables … what else am I missing? Who needs a leading man?

Something tells me this man isn’t interested in the funnybook stuff. Didn’t Nolan approach him for the Ducard/Ghul role, and when he turned it down, it went to Liam Neeson?
I hated the idea of Mortensen as Roland until all of this Javier Bardem talk. I am staunchly against any kind if Dark Tower film/t.v. project…but Viggo is a better fit for Roland than a Spaniard.
You forgot The Hobbit. If Peter Jackson does the bridging stuff which has Aragorn hunting Gollum and delivering him to the elves, and becoming the leader of the Dunedain rangers in the North, there is sure to be speculation Viggo is returning to Middle Earth.
Hey, Spider-Man isn’t wrapped. Couldn’t he drop in to play some smarmy character they can set up for three films and never pay off?
Three possibilities for what he dropped out to do instead….
1. A Cronenberg film. Eastern Promises 2 perhaps?
2. Superman: The Man of Steel.
3. The Dark Tower franchise.
I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t end up being one of those things.
Fingers crossed on Eastern Promises 2. I know Cronenberg’s been talking about it for a little while. While Superman or Dark Tower certainly have the geek cache, I’m dying to see the rest of Nikolai’s story.
I don’t think it’s for The Hobbit. I think Mortensen would have already cleared his schedule had they approached him when they did the rest (Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, etc). And I think his people would have been very open about his leaving Huntsman because of that.
I could be wrong, I just think we would have heard long before know whether they were bringing back Aragorn. It’s a real stretch to work him in, so I hope they decided not to for the sake of a tighter script.
Please let it be Roland. Please, please, please. Please.
