Warner Bros’ Akira has hit another roadblock, and lost another director. According to Deadline, Albert Hughes has left the project, citing the old “creative differences” excuse.
The studio is expected to find a replacement very quickly, as they’re determined to keep Akira on the fast track.
So, that’s that. Movies have languished a lot longer in pre-production than this, so I don’t want to say something snarky like “Give it up, it can’t happen!” However, I suspect that’s a sentiment a lot of Akira fans have, especially when they’re tossing around such dubious casting choices.
Anyway. Here’s where you can vent about Akira yet again, if you must, or suggest the one and only director you think could pull it off.

i second for the Wachowskis. But making Akira a live action (and likely watered-down) adaptation is just a mistake.

I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned Neill Blomkamp as a contender (other than the obvious fact that he’s working on Elysium, of course). His sensibilities would be a perfect fit for Akira. We also know he can work magic with a much lower budget, which would ease studio execs’ jitters. Again, he’s booked but he WOULD have been a great choice.

Luc Besson. Maybe not the only one but my first choice.
It’s Hollywood. They’re gonna fuck it up no matter what, so why not go nuclear: Michael Bay.
But otherwise I think this might be a good Blockbuster Level production for Danny Boyle to take on. He’ll be less fuck-handed at the politics and negative character traits. As long as he can control his nihilistic streak it should be a win for everybody. He and Leo are old pals and his reputation should attract a more interesting cast.
Luc Besson and Neil Blomkamp (I hated “District 9”, mind you) would be great choices, nice one ronniemick.
