Yeesh, fans of zombie fiction are staying in character and have spread the rotting, diseased gospel of AMC’s The Walking Dead far enough that the second season premiere apparently stomped basic cable records. An estimated 7.3 million people tuned in to the feature-length premiere and made good on all the demographics that advertisers shit themselves over. With a 4.8 household rating that is said to beat an (unspecified) record held for nearly 10 years, AMC can certainly claim to have a true cable phenomenon on their hands.
I didn’t catch the premiere of the show, choosing instead to spend my time in Atlantic City with Steve Buscemi. Considering even fans of the show were complaining about the kind of boring, illogical storyline that I complained about incessantly last year, I feel I made the right choice. That said, there are clearly a ton of people that are having fun with the show, so a salute to them and the show. This definitely puts the wind back in their sails after controversy that peaked with the show’s much-touted exec. producer splitting on nasty terms.
We’ll see if these numbers hold up, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Season 3 is greenlit in record time.

Like it or not, the fact that people are turning out in record numbers for something besides Jersey Shore or the Real Housewives of the 7th Level of Hell, actually makes me feel better.
Of course Breaking Bad can’t even get a 1.0….
Fantastic. Now that AMC and other networks know canning a showrunner in an abrupt and amoral fashion doesn’t hurt ratings, they’ll go right on doing it.
In fairness how many of the mainstream public that this show seems to have picked up know anything about that? They just remember it as that popular over-hyped zombie show from last year finally coming back.
People don’t generally care how the sausage gets made. They only care if it tastes good.
Sure, but how long will the sausages continue to taste good after the cook’s been kicked out the door?
How many doors with sausages will be made with cooks?
Is there a translation pending of that question?
Really? That many people watched it. Time to turn into a internet hater. FUCK THIS SHOW. It’s popular so it MUST SUCK. Only shows that no one watches are good. Playboy Club was the best show since The Tick (live action)
I ate it up and I would like some more please.
Christ almighty that’s huge ratings. Even if it drops by half, it’ll still have ratings that cable shows would kill for.
This show isn’t even that good. I was greatly disappointed with it last season and while the premiere of this season was filled with enough cliffhangers to warrant it staying on my DVR season pass, it can’t match the greatness of shows like Boardwalk Empire, Person of Interest, Homeland and Fringe.
