THR has a feature today that lists the ten most pirated movies of all time. I don’t know why, but they started the list in reverse countdown order, spoiling the whole thing from the outset. So I started with the link to #10, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which will allow you to scroll the picks in reverse order to maintain the suspense…if there is such a thing. Most of the entries don’t really surprise, but there are one or two that might not immediately come to mind, including a Best Picture. What is surprising? No Harry Potter, no Lord of the Rings, no Star Wars. So click the pic above to find out.

I find this list kinda surprising. I don’t know why. They’re all major releases that made a lot of money, seemingly regardless of pirating, or maybe the pirating is after the fact?
Because people desperate enough to own one of these hunks of poo RIGHT AWAY are generally the same ones who pathetically go to the theater to see them over and over again? Because those same people will then turn around and buy the ultra-fabulous DVD with an extra 5 minutes of footage? Then turn around and buy the super-ultra-fabulous Blu-Ray box set with 1% more resolution? Because there’s never been any link shown between piracy of films and box-office?
One question, what constitutes “piracy” in this “study”? Is it downloads, or copied disks, tapes made off of TV? What exactly?
