Doug Stanhope and Louis CK are the best two comics we have right now. Behind them are a very good group of bright and diverse minds ranging from Anthony Jeselnik to Todd Barry to Patton Oswalt but when it comes to living talents these two guys are the two which personify what keeps comedy sharp. Louis CK is fearless and prolific with inexplicable crossover appeal, and Stanhope is fearless and prolific but hellbent on attacking things with impunity. It was kismet to see Stanhope on Louis show last year, but the man still doesn’t have the attention he richly deserves. To folks who idolize (in my opinion too much) Bill Hicks, in my mind Doug is better on every level.
He has a new CD coming out and it’s high time I used this site for good:

I was wondering when Doug would put a new CD out. He reminds me a lot of Bill. And I think if Bill were still alive, they would be touring together. Ron Shock is another great comedian that unfortunately no one has heard of. Everyone should check him out.
I’m just about finished with “edgy” comedians; whatever happened to being funny? And how is saying rude shit fearless? In the converse, what would a comedian be afraid of? The last time a comedian hurt his career by being edgy was about a half-century ago.
I’m not saying I know what’s funny – but I don’t think that being unsympathetic to humans in general or attacking the concept of children is inherently so. I love black or blue humor when it happens organically; just not when it’s the schtick that someone builds their persona around. When that starts to happens, great comedians fall into their worse habits (see Carlin, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Bill Hicks, Mark Maron and especially Sam Kinnison).
Also these quotes seem like they could have come from a Carlos Mencia show*, which doesn’t help any.
*or wherever Carlos Mencia jokes originate from…

Hicks unabashedly deserves the adulation he gets, post mortem at least. But Stanhope and David Cross are modern equivalents/spiritual successors to Hicks. They, along with Louie CK, are easily the best in the world today. There’s not even any competition.
CK, for my money, has taken the mantle Carlin left behind.. and he just keeps getting better and better.
