I’ve been a big fan of the Maniac Cop franchise ever since I saw most of the second one late one night in a motel room when my parents and I were on a trip back when I was a kid. It wasn’t until years later that I got to see the first one, the second in its entirety, and the third one. It was really cool seeing Sanchez from Licence To Kill (one of my favorite movies of all time, and my favorite Bond film) playing a good guy in the latter 2 films.
Now there’s word from an interview conducted by Daily Grindhouse that Nicholas Winding Refn has hopped on board the new Maniac Cop film (it’s set to be a prequel) as a producer alongside franchise brains William Lustig and Larry Cohen.
It’s not a done deal just yet, but according to them it’s close, and with a guy like Refn on board it seems like a sure thing. I’d love to see Lusting direct again, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t want Refn to take a shot at the film if he’s given the opportunity.
The film is also going to sport a larger budget, and I hope they have a place in the film for the original Maniac Cop, Robert Z’Dar.

After painting themselves into a corner in the third one, this almost HAS to be a prequel! With any luck, this will be the Rise of the Planet of the Apes/X-Men: First Class/Prometheus of the Maniac Cop franchise.
Does anyone other than me remember HBO’s Thursday Night Prime? This was back in 1991-1993 or so and would feature a different B-Movie, usually action or horror, in the primetime slot. That’s where I first saw both Maniac Cop 2 AND 3, as well as Showdown in Little Tokyo (and several other Dolph flicks), Operation Paratrooper, and the Corey Haim vehicle Prayer of the Rollerboys. There were a LOT of cheesy post-apocalyptic sci-fi flicks that took place in the far off time of the 21st century. Man, remember how futuristic the future used to be?

Z’Dar was in a rascal the past few times I’ve seen him, seems his mobility isn’t that great, so sadly, I don’t know if we’d get a cameo if this happens.
But….He wasn’t a “maniac” cop before the first film. That makes no sense. We’ve already seen and heard about what happened.
Anyway, part 2 is my favorite, even though they killed off Bruce too quickly.
Yeah, I remember seeing on the SYNAPSE DVD that Z’Dar had both his hips replaced due to an accident he’d had. He seemed primed for a return, but it has been a while since then.
Cohen is a very talented screenwriter, so I have faith that he will make the prequel work and not make it some stupid cash in on the name.
