Found footage horror film V/H/S is hitting VOD August 31st before going into limited release October 5th. Magnolia Pictures has cut a new trailer, and it’s pretty goddamn great.
The film tells the story of a group of criminals hired to break into a house to steal one, specific VHS tape. I’ll let the trailer take it from there:
Rare these days that a trailer can actually raise the hairs on the back of my neck. But something about the stripped down, visceral approach has me hoping V/H/S turns out to be one of the good ones. It’s a collaborative work, directed in parts by Ti West, Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and a foursome going by the name of Radio Silence. The film was a hit for the Sundance crowd, should be a fun one to check out come August.

Don’t get your hopes up. The movie is only ok. Two of the segments are good, two have good ideas and one is a Ti West short film. If you just want some found footage gore and nudity, well, you can do worse, I guess.
I guess after being more disappointed in movies in the past 15 years than ever before, I feel the best way to go into this is with very low expectations. Nice trailer and all, but why do I think it’s too big for its britches?
I dunno, that looked pretty damn awesome — I am definitely up for this one, once it’s out.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and still think it is my favorite movie of the year so far. That’s not saying anything about quality of the other films this year, but this was just a very entertaining anthology. Horror anthologies so rarely turn out good, which is why the only one most ever remember is Creepshow. This has some 1 very creepy segment, 3 very well done segments and then you have the wraparound and the not as effective Ti West piece (I like[not love] West and his atmospheric control, but it doesn’t work well in a 20 minute segment). Definitely worth your time.

I generally hate found footage. Enjoyed Blair Witch my first watching, didn’t care for Paranormal much at all and most the others. I will say that this year, I have enjoyed two found footage films in the theater, one because of word of mouth (Chronicle) and this when it was at the Atlanta Film Festival. The footage used if from different mediums (video chat, eyeglass spy camera, security cameras) and each story moves quickly to fit into the anthology, which takes away the lull that most found footage have. I really enjoyed this and hope it does well. BTW, there is definitely a nice amount of effects to add to the production value.
The poster kind of looks like a teaser image for a snuff-film themed Punisher Movie. Not that it’s bad or anything, it’s look pretty cool.
