It’s two-for-one on CHUD today, with confirmation that the upcoming Dumb & Dumber sequel reuniting the Farrelly brothers with stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels was to be titled Dumb & Dumber To. Also, it’s totally not happening anymore. Entertainment Tonight spoke to Carrey who expressed displeasure over lack of enthusiasm on the parts of Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema:
“I would have thought Dumb and Dumber To was a no-brainer, after all it’s implied in the title.”
It seems like a petty thing to squabble over, but Carrey’s taking his ball and going home. Reading between the lines, I wonder whether or not “lack of enthusiasm” is Ace Ventura-speak for “not enough money.” One assumes that Carrey’s exit means death to the project. I can’t see Daniels sticking around, though after Three Stooges one might suspect the Bros. Farrelly would certainly be willing to roll the dice and recast. Carrey will next be seen in the magic comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone with Steve Carell, while Daniels continues work on Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom over at HBO.

Shame. I was actually sort of looking forward to this, being a fan of the original. At the very least, it would have been worth seeing Carrey and Daniels reunited.
At least Jeff will be nabbing a handful of awards instead.
WB/New Line have got balls to try to lowball Carrey or anyone else, if that ends up being the case, after going ahead on their own with ill-advised prequels (Dumb and Dumberer) and sequels (Son of the Mask) to his earlier hits that didn’t involve him. He’s hardly the bad guy in this, and it’s up to the studios to make the reparations here.
Wow, what a shame. Would have been great to see one of the all-time classic comedy duos together again.
