Between the trailers and posters and images we’ve previously posted, it would be silly to go on cynically digging any further on John Carter. Except, this trailer actually kind of works? While the unflattering “Prince of Persia meets Avatar” equation can’t help but flash in my head, I really do like some of the imagery in this trailer, and the scale feels more on par with ambition of the rumored budget. I’m still not particularly engrossed by the setting itself, but they’ve definitely filled things out from the empty teaser trailer, and aside from the blatantly CGI feel of the crowds of Mars-folk, the effects look clean and sharp.
I think we can move this from “actively dreading” to “sure, I’ll see that.”
That said: FUCKING ROCK SUPERSTAR?!?! (ejaculated egg all over my face with that one, but to the commenters below, yes, it was indeed the P.Diddy abomination that threw me off of Kashmir all the way into Cypress Hill. All that said, the point remains the same.) Whoever Requiem-For-A-Tower’d that song should… really not do things like that.

The song was just Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” done orchestral. I didn’t have a problem with it, makes sense for this film. Maybe I’m not getting a more contemporary reference that is making it bug you.
Yeah, I’m not sure where you got Rock Superstar (whatever that is)…totally Kashmir. And it works, given the whole “stranger in a strange land” angle.

Ahhh Kashmir, think it’s a good fit. Actually looks decent. I’m still more interested in how they handle the astral projection thing (definitely the weakest aspect of the book) than anything the trailer has to show.
Was that the Puff Daddy shitpiece done for Godzilla US you’re referring to? Kashmir’s had some really nice reworkings/covers over the years, that wasn’t one of them.
Yeah, I’m still getting a Prequel vibe, but about halfway into the trailer I started getting interested.
There was that P Diddy/Jimmy Page version from 10 years back, is that were the confusion lies>

Problem is, ERB’s been strip-mined by generations of half-baked sci-fi/fantasy writers/filmmakers (and some that were actually fully baked). Hard to imagine how, at this point, the property can come off as anything but derivative.

I kid, of course. This movie now officially looks like something I will be seeing and enjoying in however many months. Good on Stanton. I’m sure he was fully the cause of that which is making this appear so solid.
Wasn’t Rock Superstar a collaboration between Fear Factory and Naughty by Nature from about 10 years ago? At any rate…this is now shaping up to be something I’m interested in seeing. What I don’t get is why Disney is so allergic to the whole “Mars” angle. It seems like they barely even want to acknowledge that he’s on another planet!

There is nothing at stake for a man who is “that good!” – superawesome is superboring.
Incidentally, several artists for the book covers have had a much, much more interesting take on the Arena. This whole production is undercooked. Safe. “Franchise friendly”. Next.
